I can't help but wonder what's in a woman's purse. I love peeking inside women's handbags, especially because the contents of one's handbag can tell a great deal about the owner and offer a brief look at the owner's personality, essentials and lifestyle.
I rotate my bags. When I carry my Balenciaga bag, I usually eliminate a book and the pocket moleskine notebook because the bag is already slightly heavy. So, this is basically the essentials that you will find inside my two bags when I don't attend school (add school books, pencil case, sheet music and a mac):
- Umbrella (which I always carry with me, because I certainly cannot rely on the weather forecast. It protects me from getting soaked in the rain/snow and it protects my leather bag and the contents in it (such as my computer!)..)
- iPod (my form of isolation from the busy world)
- Pouch (I use it as a wallet (because I haven't found the perfect leather wallet yet), first-aid kit (band-aids, pain-killers, women-stuff etc) and a place to store tiny objects like a USB flash drive.)
- Hand cream (something that I just recently started to carry as my hands get very dry and itchy in winter.)
- Lipstick (not really a necessity, it's been lying in my bag for months but once in a while I put it on.)
- Concealer (because my skin is unpredictable.)
- Novels (one in English and one in Norwegian. I like having two novels with me for every mood I could possibly be in. I spend several hours on public transportation each day, and I hardly ever have time to read at home. So when I'm not catching up on lost sleep I read.)
- Pens (one fountain pen and one drawing pen (FYI I can't draw)..)
- Moleskine weekly notebook (One of my most important essentials. I'm doomed without my calendar.)
- Pocket notebook (I love lists!)
- Eucalyptus flavored gum (it's a staple)
- Keys
- Vaseline (for dry lips and taming my eyebrows)
- A matchbox (You never know when you'll need it. --> Chemistry experiments)
- An old-fashioned cell phone
- Hand sanitizer (I'm a hygiene freak..)
Regarding handbag essentials, I've always considered myself a minimalist compared to other women I know. But after writing down my handbag's contents, it seems like I'm a maximalist rather than a minimalist. So, what do you carry in your bag? Do share in the comments!
I am also tagging everyone on my blogroll to do a post on their handbag essentials.

ReplyDeleteWhatever the foot thing is it looks cute! The contents of my handbag vary slightly depending on where I go. Plus I leave a scarf and umbrella in the car so I tote them as needed. I'd say I usually carry: wallet, car keys, cell phone, hand sanitizer, digital camera, and sunglasses + case.
ReplyDeleteWow! You have a lot in your bag! I only carry my ipod, wallet and cell phone around (and lipstick when I'm traveling). I really don't need anything else (except for schoolbooks, a calendar, calculator and pens when I'm going to school).
ReplyDelete<3 Benthe
I must say my bag contents are basically the same as yours... but anyways.
ReplyDelete1. iPod (can't live without it).
2. iPhone (which I'm the worst at checking/answering).
3. Notebook.
4. Pencilcase.
5. Keys.
6. Wallet.
7. Gym card and key card.
8. One brown lipstick.
9. Klöver vaselin.
10. Cover all mix.
11. A book if I'm reading one at the moment.
12. My macbook if I'm going to school.
13. Nail file.
14. Random papers that got left behind and are now hiding out in the bottom...
ReplyDeleteWallet, keys, makeup bag, umbrella, phone, lipstick. And about half the time there's an extra pair of heels in my bag, the other half there's a set of gym clothes and a pair of sneakers. (And yes, the bag I carry is as big as a suitcase.)
ReplyDeleteThis is fantastically revealing!
ReplyDeleteI tend to travel a little more lightly but, just like you, couldn't be without my faithful Moleskine wherever the day takes me.

Ane Sunde: Me too.
ReplyDeletePret a porter P: The foot-thing is a bottle-opener from California, haha.
Benthe: You must have a perfect complexion and never dry hands or lips! Lucky.
Efvva: Ah, I usually have random school-related papers and take out menus in my bag too..
maren: Ææh nei!! Du kan beholde ink or spare til pompon i svart!!
Caille: Hahaha!!
Style Souk: I am curious on what else you're carrying. Maybe you can inspire me to travel lighter.
I carry a lot more than you do, so you're a minimalist by my standards. I always carry a map of NYC (where I'm currently staying), a novel, moleskine sketchbook, digital camera, umbrella/sunglasses, calendar book, iphone, a pair of ballerinas, hairspray, mac lipstick, nars orgasm and mineral powder, keys, gym and bus cards, wallet, chewing gum, hand cream, hand sanitizer, a pen, a bottle of water, a pack of cigarettes, lighter, my perfume (lolita lempicka), nail file, rosebud lip balm, ... I think that's all.
ReplyDelete1. leather wallet from mango
ReplyDelete2. lipsyl (I play the flute and hate the fact that I'm not able to use lipstick everyday..)
3. old-fashioned cellphone!
4. moleskine
5. keys
6. Ipod
7. water
and usually some sheet music/schoolbooks. thats it!
& toothbrush & toothpaste, minikit!
ReplyDeleteI too carry a bit of everything: Aveda Hand Relief, red Hayden Harnett wallet, Chanel No. 5 purse spray, grape Hayden Harnett carryall pouch with tweezers, band-aids, Aveda lipstick, Aquaphor lipbalm, dental floss, eye drops, extra key, pen, checkbook, iTouch, Blackberry, tissues, peppermint gum (always), Raybans, hairbrush, swiss army pocket knife.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing that I can get all this into a LV Speedy. Yes, it appears that I might be a very good baglady. Or a successful boy scout.
1 -"Coach" Pouch which I use as a wallet as I don't like any wallet I see (I also keep my pen in there ).
ReplyDelete2 - make up bag w/not a lot of make up but some essentials like ban-aids, small mirror, etc and 3 different lipstick because not sure which one I'll be in the mood for during the day.
3 - An "evil" eye glass ornament that a friend from Turkish gave me. Goes w/me everywhere.
4 - A keys pouch (i have many keys)
5 - moleskin notebook for lists and things I shouldn't forget
6 - blackberry (which is also my phone).
7 - During the week (sometimes not always, it depends how high my heels are) a pair of shoes as a spare. I live in NY, we walk a lot!.
8 - My work passes (two of them... I work for one company but my office is in another building so I need both if I need to go to either offices).
9 - A book/magazine.
10 - subway pass
11 - sunglasses
I don't think that you are maximalista... I think you carry the essentials but I always envy girls who don't carry anything around.
My essentials:
ReplyDeleteWater bottle (must have at all times)
Keys
Ipod+headphone
Phone (dropped too many times, I'm surprise it still functions)
Week Planner (leather bound with gold-rimmed pages which I love, but I still miss my moleskine)
Pilot G2 Pen
Wallet from Hobointernational
Glasses (just in case)
Gum- Trident
Small makeup bag: Rosebud Salve, Chanel lipstick and gloss, blot paper, mini perfume, L'Occitane hand cream
Chocolate (always have to have food/sugar-for low blood sugar)
Small blank Moleskine
Book of the moment: Eugene Onegin
I thought I was a minimalist too, but this just makes me sound high maintenance...
I used to carry a lighter, but matches sound more fun!
Wallet, keys, lip balm, ipod, umbrella, moleskine weekly notebook, blackberry, handcream and one pen.
ReplyDeleteDo you carry your laptop in your balenciaga bag? I would be so scared that it can't take the weight haha.
Thanks for the response people!
ReplyDeleteJessica: No way, I carry my mac(book pro) and school boks (+ everything on the photo apart from the novels and the moleskine notebook) in my marc by marc jacobs hobo. Incredible how much weight that handbag can take!
Have you considered Comme de Garçons trifold wallets as an option? I was amidst the same dilemma until I saw them. Instant love.
ReplyDeleteiwishihadtaste: Actually, I didn't like the solution inside the wallet. I thought it was the perfect wallet, but it's sadly not what I'm looking for :(
ReplyDeleteoh no. I wish I could tell everyone in the whole world to not use vaselin on their lips. Almost every lotion/lip balm etc. contains mineral oil which never penetrates the skin properly, and therefore only makes you wanna apply more and more, with no long lasting effect.
ReplyDeleteI just wanna share this 'cause I used to use creams and balms with this ingredient, and after I switched I don't have to apply nearly as much moisture any more.
It's because the oil's molecules are bigger than the ones in the moistening ingredients, so it just creates a layer that blocks the working stuff from sinking into the skin.
And vaselin is just another name for mineral oil.
Some people can use it with no problem, but I'd highly reccomend moisture products without this oil.
Hope it's a usefull tip!
what computer bag do you have? :)
ReplyDeleteHa, I can't live without my Moleskine calendar/notebook either. Not to mention that their simple and elegant design is amazing to look at.
ReplyDeletemuus: A black one from tucano!
sheet music? are you a musician!? so cool
ReplyDeletebeautiful black notebooks
oh wallets wallets! try COS! they have these beautiful simple but complex wallets that are folded before reaching the compartments and come in soo many different colors of leather... champagne, black, brown and navy I think
ReplyDeleteSelina: Agree, they're so beautiful. I buy these notebooks for aesthetically reasons too, haha.
ReplyDeleteIvania: Yes, I'm a musician and I work as a piano teacher! haha! Thank you for the tip. I'm going to Barcelona in 2 weeks and there's a COS store there!

I like to look it up sometimes and read it :) Time flies, posted almost a year ago. It's funny that back then, you already commented about the Jeffrey Cambell Litha boots, I can't believe they are part of 'The Uniform' for so long!
Thanks for tagging me. I'm actually quite amazed how much I tote around too - I always wonder how guys get around with no bag at all. But although most days I carry tonnes of stuff, sometimes I only have a phone and some cash and a credit card in a card case.
ReplyDeleteThen again, if I carried nothing around, my beautiful totes will go to waste...
Haha, I love that you have an "old-fashioned" cell phone--it looks a lot like mine!
ReplyDeleteBlackberry, drawingpencils (drawing is my job hehe), gloves, tissues, wallet (= Comme des Garçons) lip-vaseline, keys and a book (Antony Bourdain, kitchen confidential).
ReplyDeletei LOVE these posts about what's in chic people's bags :) and your balenciaga bag is gorgeous! i think you've inspired me to do an updated 'what's in my bag' post on my blog.
I love handbag content posts and I think I've pared down the contents in mine quite a bit due to my back problems. Here goes
ReplyDelete1. Wallet
2. Keys
3. Mint
4. Lip Balm
5. Hand Cream
6. Phone/ Daily Planner/ Music Player
7. Ear-buds for phone
8. Water Bottle
9. My school folder w. loose paper, pen, printed notes (when I go to school)
:)
Let me preface this by saying I am a mom :)
ReplyDelete1. Wallet
2. Lipsitck
3. Lipbalm
4. Droid phone (which acts as my planner/calendar/ipod as well)
5. Pouch with pens, camera, flip camcorder(to catch cute kid moments), hairband, tissues, coupons/giftcards
6. Kid pouch with diapers, wipes, sunscreen (which I remove when running around solo)
Love what's in your bag posts. Love your bag too! :)

ahh, so stylish! beautiful bag and the content really show your personality. thanks for the tag!
ReplyDeleteLovely post, Fleurette, as always.
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking lately, as the spring/summer fashion hits the mgazines, about the practicality of the four-season wardrobe, and I wrote a lengthy blog post on the subject a few minutes ago. I'd love to hear your thoughts. I
Mine's up! http://tinyurl.com/326wb9s
ReplyDeleteI swear it must be a estrogen thing because I'm pretty sure every female likes to look other female bags hence the the ridiculous amount of "whats in my bag" tag on youtube, haha. (yes I watch them...)
ReplyDeleteLove it! I always rotate bags too and I agree some bags are already too heavy by itself you don't wanna put anything more in it. Love your blog and your madass style!
ReplyDeleteKate
ReplyDeleteWhere did you purchase that adorable pouch?
ReplyDeleteOnce i bought a house i found that i was always carrying a mini tape measure with me! lol
ReplyDeletelove this post! am fascinated by other people's handbags too.
ReplyDeletemine is a mess: full of makeup (miniatures specifically for handbag purposes), books, bits of paper with scribbles on the...
admire your organisation and attitude xx
I really want a Balenciaga bag - but not sure which is the classic one. What is yours called?
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get that adorable pouch?
ReplyDeleteHave you found the perfect wallet yet? I was on the same hunt for a very long time and I finally found one that works for me. It's a men's wallet. I am pretty sure I'll be using it for many years to come. Here it is:
